SOLO RINGING

Registration fee:

Solo Ringer Participant – $175 (limited to 8, pre-application required)

Attend as a Solo Participant or an Observer. Each Solo Participant (limited to 8) will be coached on one piece under Linda Krantz's tutelage. Participating solo students and observers will have roundtable discussions throughout the two days reflecting on the coaching sessions as well as important topics related uniquely to solo ringing.

Not quite ready to step to the solo table? Then participate as an Observer. You will get to observe Linda's coaching first-hand, and contribute to the Roundtable discussions

For those who wish to participate as solo ringers, an application is required before acceptance to the event. The application requires candidates to provide a link to a video of them playing the piece they would like to be coached on. The video should show a clear view of the ringer and the bells on the table, preferably from the front. The application will also request information about each candidate’s music education and handbell experience.

Observers do not need to submit an advance application – just proceed to registration.

Technical Requirements:

1. Participants and Observers must have computer with webcam, mic, and adequate internet connection to participate in extended video meeting.

2. Participants must have the ability to make a video of themselves playing a solo piece, where the participant and bells on the table are in full view.

3. Participants must have access to needed bells, equipment, and set-up space for the duration of the event.

COMPOSITION

Registration fee: $175 (limited to 8, pre-application required)

Up to eight composers will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with Jason Krug to hone their skills in composing and arranging. This master class is primarily for directors and musicians who may not be experienced composers/arrangers, but now find themselves in a situation where they need to arrange music for their ensemble. Participants should have knowledge and understanding of music theory principles. Compositions should be primarily small ensemble (3 octaves or less) as we are unable to guarantee a full 5+ octave demonstration choir. Participants will have ample time to work on compositions. Students will electronically share their work with Jason throughout the event. There will also be opportunities for group discussion and collaboration.

An application requesting information about each canidate's music education and handbell experience, as well as goals related to composing and arranging, is required to be considered for participation. Once selected candidates will submit a draft of the composition they would like to work on to be recorded by an ensemble.

We will have an ensemble who will play and record the composition drafts and provide feedback, then have a closing concert of the finished compositions at the end of the event.

There are no observers for this event, except to view the final concert.

Technical Requirements:

1. Participants must have music notation software able to save files in MusicXML format

2. Participants must have computer with webcam, mic, and adequate internet connection to participate in extended video meeting

EDUCATION

Registration fee: $90 single day (limited to 12 each day)

Up to twelve music educators can participate in each day of our Education Master Series, exploring the many ways to implement handbells and handchimes into the music curriculum. Greig Ashurst and Gillian Erlenborn will guide participants through two days of learning; showcasing what handbells and handchimes can do when utilized to reinforce musical concepts and give students a fun, kinesthetic musical experience.

Day 1: Incorpating and Expanding in Elementary Setting (April 23, 2022)

The first session (4/23) will focus on the ways that handbells and handchimes can be incorporated into the elementary classroom. Participants will learn basic handbell and handchime technique and maintenance, gather ideas and resources for lesson and unit plans, and figure out exactly what they need to make these instruments work in their curriculum.

Day 2: Creating and Incorporating in Middle and Upper Setting (April 30, 2022)

The second session (4/30) will focus on how to start up a handbell ensemble in an upper elementary,  middle, or high school setting, either as a stand-alone course or embedded in an existing music class. The session will cover basic handbell and handchime technique and maintenance, repertoire selection, handbell assignments for various types of ensembles, methods and curricula, and assessment strategies.
