Handbells are a musical instrument. Handbells are cast of bronze. Handbells often mean working with an ensemble. Are handbells a sanctuary? What are handbells to you? Consider ringing handbells as your sanctuary; your escape; your special place. Most of us lead busy, stressful lives, and many don’t take the time to rest, relax, and unwind. Handbells can become a sanctuary. The time spent in rehearsal or music preparation is special time concentrating on something you love.

From the Beginning

Let’s start at the beginning. For the last few centuries, the very first toy given to an infant has been: a rattle. Or, as I like to call it, a pre-bell.

From the time we can grip a toy and swing it into our loving parent’s nose, we have been given rattles. They are wonderful toys for babies. They are our first means of scientific exploration.

I Just Don’t Care

How many times has a version of that phrase come out of your mouth? I just don’t care.

Musicians are a quirky bunch. We tend to be deeply passionate about our craft, and that passion often spills over into other parts of our lives. But that also tends to make us enthusiastic “do-ers” who hopelessly overcommit ourselves. Sooner or later, something has to give. Unfortunately, that “something” is often “everything.”
